What to do in Tonga

The capital, Nuku'alofa, is located on the main island of Tongatapu, and on the waterfront you can admire the Victorian-style White Royal Palace dating back to 1867, as well as the Pangao Si ' I, the Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua, the royal tombs of Mala'ekula and the Cathedral of St. Mary, before strolling on the charming market of Talamahu.

On Tongatapu, there are many vanilla plantations, and a park where to observe wild birds, especially sumptuous red parrots. On the east coast, several archaeological sites are worth a visit, including the famous pyramids of Mu'a stone, home to the ancient tombs of the kings: that of Ha'amonga'a Maui dates from the 13th century and is built with blocks of stone Of 40 tonnes.

Hiking enthusiasts can visit the island of Eua, which has mountains and deep forests, to explore at the rhythm of the walk.

On Tofua there are active volcanoes, a lush forest and a large central lake where you can swim. It was on this island that the Bounty revolt took place in 1789.

Do not miss diving in one of the many sites that the archipelago offers, especially on Vava'u and Eua.

Tonga: The basics

A passport is sufficient for a stay of less than 3 months, but you must have a return ticket.

The current currency is pa'anga (TOP).

We arrive in Tonga by plane via Australia, Polynesia, New Zealand or Hawaii, and the international airport is located on the main island Tongatapu, about 15 km from the capital. To travel in the archipelago, there are minibuses and taxis on Tongatapu, but you can also rent a car. Ships travel daily between islands, and there are also air links between some islands but their cost is quite high.

For your accommodation, Tonga is still very little tourist, you will not find modern hotel complexes but small hotels or modest rentals but always close to nature.

No vaccination is required but it is prudent to have up-to-date vaccines. It is also not advisable to drink tap water.

Safety is good in the archipelago: however, be careful if you swim on isolated beaches, currents can be strong and they regularly lead to drowning.
