The capital of Mauritania, Nouakchott has 800 thousand inhabitants. Situated between the desert and the Atlantic Ocean, the city, dating from the fifties, was built in two parts, one around the fort, the other around the mosque. A major problem of the city is the lack of fresh water, which comes from a source sixty miles away. There are many markets in the city that act as places for business and meetings and there you can discover the many origins of the warm and welcoming population. Also visit some of the dozens of mosques, and various craft shops scattered throughout the city. The French Cultural Centre of Saint-Exupéry is a very interesting place to visit offering exhibitions, performances and concerts of all types. The beach will allow you to enjoy the peaceful serenity of this city and the fishing port will attract the early risers who can buy freshly caught fish and seafood. Hotels and restaurants are plentiful in the city, with a wide range of prices and services.
