What to do in Vientiane : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Laos, Vientiane has a little over 700,000 inhabitants. Located on the banks of the Mekong on the Thailand border, the city was founded in the 16th Century, and was then subject to Burmese, Siamese and French influences. Several monuments attest to this history: Colonial villas and the Church of the Sacred Heart built in the Indochinese period, Patouxai, erected in memory of the victims of the war in Laos, Pha That Luang, or the Great Stupa, symbol of the Buddhist faith, the Vat Simuong sanctuary, the most revered in the city, as well as many pagodas scattered in different districts throughout Vientiane. You will also discover the Morning Market, a popular building housing a large bazaar where you can find all kinds of produce. The city is served by an international airport. Travel around Vientiane is by bicycle or scooter, tuk-tuk or bus, or even walking. You can easily find a room in a guest house for a very inexpensive price, and you will certainly enjoy the freshly grilled fish available from the stalls on the banks of the Mekong.
