What to do in Santo Domingo : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo has a little less than three million inhabitants. Served nowadays by two international airports, the city was founded in the 15th Century and represents the oldest site of European population in America: Unesco has classified its colonial buildings as a World Heritage Site. Among the latter you can visit the University of St. Thomas Aquinas, the home of Christopher Columbus, the Ozama Fortress, the Santa Maria la Menor Cathedral and the Embassy of France located in the house of Hernan Cortes. Wandering around the streets of the historic centre you will find beautiful houses, churches, and monasteries, or stroll through the commercial area of the new city. Do not miss visits to some of the many museums, such as the Museum of the Dominican Man, the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Natural History. Other sites worth visiting include the National Aquarium with its Plexiglas tunnel, the Faro a Colon, a tribute to Christopher Columbus, or the Botanical Gardens that you can visit by train. You can find a variety of hotels ranging from luxurious to simple but charming in the old town and the metro will facilitate your transport around the city.
