What to do in Cotonou : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Benin, Cotonou has close to one million inhabitants with an ever increasing population. A commercial hub in the area, it possesses a major port which is responsible for the majority of international trade. There are a few major touristic sites that should be mentioned in particular; the Crafts Centre when typical Benin objects can be found made by local artists, and where it is normal to barter, there is also the open-air Dankopta Market, which offers material, shoes, household object and foods. Visit Red Star Place with its monument to the Dahomean warriors, and also the Palace of Congress. There are beautiful beaches that are well worth a visit, particularly Fidjrossè with its inns and bars that make pleasant places for relaxing between swimming and sun bathing. The night life is vivacious in Cotonou with piano bars, jazz clubs, cinemas and various dance and musical events in the different cultural centres. The numerous restaurants offer a range of dishes from around the country and delicious local specialities.
