The capital of Austria, Vienna has more than one and a half million inhabitants. Divided by the Danube River, it has a rich history, and its city centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Its location at the heart of Europe makes it a crossroads for communications. The city experiences a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and hot, sometimes stormy summers. The city’s rich cultural life has conferred it with an international reputation since the early 20th Century, many composers were born there over several centuries. It also houses some major museums, such as the Hofburg with the Sisi Museum and the Emperor’s apartments, and particularly the Museum quarter composed of several sections, and the Liechtenstein Museum with its private art collections. You can admire many beautiful monuments including St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Opera House, the Albertina Palace, or Josefsplatz. Be sure to visit the Viennese cafés as well. The city is served by an international airport, and travel is by metro or tram, which provide a very tight and efficient network. You should also try the local cuisine with its diverse influences, some people find it a little heavy but it can be excellent. Regarding accommodation, it is wise to book in advance because the tourist season is almost continuous; the city also hosts many different festivals and conferences.
