What to do in Tunis : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Tunisia, Tunis has more than 700,000 inhabitants, and almost two and a half million in the entire agglomeration. It is built in the Gulf, in the north of the country. The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, and is beautiful sunny all year round. You can visit the Medina, which is the historical heart of the city, with its palaces, the Tourbet El Bey mausoleum, and the Great Zaytuna Mosque. Also the district of LaFayette with the Great Synagogue and the Habib Thameur gardens. The souks are another undeniable attraction of the city, with their maze of alleyways and numerous artisans and shops, which provides a festival of colours, aromas and sounds. You can also visit the Bardo Museum with its magnificent Roman mosaics, or the Dar Ben Abdallah, the former palace that became the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions. The city is also the centre of the country’s cultural life, and you can enjoy many shows, theatre plays, operas, ballets, puppetry and circus shows, or participate in festivals such as the International Festival of Carthage which takes place in the amphitheatre and features singers, actors, musicians and dancers, or the Carthage Film Festival. Buses and the metro are used to move around the city which is also served by an international airport.
