What to do in Tours : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
City of France on the banks of the Loire, Tours has about 135,000 inhabitants, and is accessed via the A10 from Paris via Orleans, or from Bordeaux. It also has a bus station and a railway station and an airport (Tours Loire Valley) that links the city to London, Dublin, Marseille, Porto, Marrakech, Ajaccio and Figari. For travel in the city, you can take the bus or tram, and Tours is also crossed by the Eurovéloroute Rivers, which crosses Europe from the Black Sea to the Atlantic Ocean but allows the more modest traveler discover the castles of the Loire by bike. The historic city center is a World Heritage by UNESCO, and is one of the best preserved in France. You will discover several buildings of interest, mansions, wood-framed houses. See especially the Saint-Gatien cathedral, begun in the 12th century; Tours of the castle, former residence of the counts of Anjou; St. Julien church, former Benedictine abbey from the 6th century; Charlemagne Tower and the Clock Tower, the 13th century ruins; the Archbishop's Palace which now houses the Museum of Fine Arts; St. Martin Basilica in its neo-Byzantine style of the 19th century.
