What to do in Syracuse : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Italian town in south-eastern Sicily, Syracuse is located on the coast and has just under 125 000. Founded in the 8th century BC, it has a historic center classified heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Several sites to discover in the city, like the Fountain of Arethusa, with its legend of a nymph transformed into a source; Cave Ear of Dionysius, and her very special acoustic; the Greek theater of Neapolis, one of the greatest monuments of antiquity, carved into the rock in the 5th century BC; Ortigia, the oldest settlement of the town, grounded by the Ponte Nuovo extending one of the main streets of the city; the cathedral and its square surrounded by baroque palaces, especially at night when all lit up; the Catacombs of San Giovanni in the district of Acradina; the ruins of the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista, above the crypt of St. Marcian; Regional Archaeological Museum Paolo Orsi, reflecting the history of Sicily from prehistory to the period of the colonies; Palace Mergulese-Montalto, with its beautiful windows with finely carved arches. And these are only examples, as the treasures of the city are many! To access Syracuse airport is located about fifty kilometers from the city, Catania-Fontanarossa, but can also be reached by ferry from the mainland, the car is the easiest way to browse Sicily.
