What to do in Skyros : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Greek island in the Aegean Sea, located in the archipelago of the Sporades, Skyros has approximately 2700 inhabitants, who live from agriculture and fisheries, as well as embroidery and woodworking, local craft specialties. Skyros has a mountainous terrain and offers the traveler a very peaceful atmosphere and a particularly hospitable welcome. You can visit the island of archaeological sites as Palamari in the north, with its remains of the Bronze Age, and Kastro, ancient acropolis where residents took refuge during pirate attacks; Byzantine churches like Saint-Georges perched on a rock above the sea, or Our Lady of Kitso; the Archaeological Museum and the Folk Museum; St. George monastery built in the 10th century; the grave of the poet Rupert Brooke, south of the island; Magazia beach, where several water sports. You can make many excursions on the island and see dolphins or seals, as well as specimens of the amazing breed of small horses that are only found on this island. To note, the beautiful Byzantine-style wooden furniture still produced on the island. Skyros is accessed by ferry from Skiathos or from Euboea. On the island, there are few taxis, but buses run, and you can rent a car.
