What to do in Shanghai : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The city with the highest population in China, Shanghai has more than twenty million inhabitants. Located to the east of the country, on the Huangpu River, over time it is becoming a global metropolis, with its economic and cultural development experiencing perpetual growth in recent years. It has a humid subtropical climate. Around the city you will discover amazing art deco architecture from the 30s, hundreds of skyscrapers, and a mixed atmosphere from different cultures. Certain sites are particularly noteworthy, such as the Temple of Confucius dating from 1219, the unusual Puxi district that has not been destroyed and rebuilt, the magnificent Jade Buddha Temple, the famous Bund and its buildings dating back 30 years and several museums including the Museum of Urbanism, or the very modern and interesting Shanghai Museum, that traces the history of China. You may also wish to visit the Tea Market on Datong Road, the Botanical Gardens, or Jinjiang Amusement Park. The city boasts a varied nightlife with evening harbour cruises, the theatre and opera, and tasting some of the thousands of local specialties available from the excellent city restaurants or the street stalls.
