Capital of Iceland and the northernmost city of the world, Reykjavik has about 120,000 inhabitants. Located near the Arctic Circle, the original city site was founded in the 9th Century. Today, the business and cultural centre of the country, it has a sub polar oceanic climate with nonexistent nights in early summer, and limited to four hours days in winter. The city is served by two airports and ports. You can visit several museums including the National Museum which traces the history of Iceland, the National Gallery and its works by Icelandic painters, the Open Air Arbaejarsafn Museum which has houses from the 19th Century filled with local everyday objects. There are a number of interesting monuments worth visiting, such as Reykjavik cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the city, or Perlan, a historical building built on Oskjuhlio hill. Do not miss out on sites such as the botanical gardens, the lake, the National Library, the seat of the Icelandic parliament and the cathedral basilica.
