The administrative capital of French Polynesia, Papeete has about 25,000 inhabitants. It is the base of most of the institutions and infrastructure of Polynesia. North of Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean, Papeete has a tropical climate. It has an international airport, and its tourist attractions are essentially linked to this heavenly environment and magnificent beaches, but many other sites are worth visiting. The Papeete Market is one in particular, full of life, colour and friendly conversation where you will find various local foods and crafts in an unforgettable atmosphere. You can also see the unique architecture of the City Hall, Notre Dame Cathedral in the centre, the magnificent home of Queen Marau, the beautiful gardens of the Assembly with many fruit trees, and the legendary Stuart Hotel where Matisse lived, not forgetting the famous 300 years old banyan tree on Tarahoi Place. To move around the city, there is a useful taxi shuttle service. Hotels and restaurants are easy to find throughout the city, and you can taste local specialties stick to traditional French cooking, or enjoy Chinese or Japanese dishes.
