A Greek island in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, Naxos is the largest of the archipelago and has approximately 25,000 inhabitants. Made famous by the legend of Theseus, it now attracts tourists who appreciate its typical Mediterranean climate, its beaches, its plant life and wild life. Inhabited since prehistoric times, many sites and museums bear witness to its rich past including Chora, the main port with its monumental gate, the two remaining towers of the old fortress, the 13th Century cathedral, the Ursulines convent, the Archaeological Museum, and Demeter’s temple at Sangri, among other places. Traditional craftsmanship is to be seen throughout the island, especially weaving, but also embroidery and confectionery. Visitors may access Naxos by air through a small airport, but the port is also active, and a daily ferry connects the island to Piraeus. You could enjoy a pleasant stay on the coast to enjoy the beautiful beaches, or go to traditional villages in the interior, where you can enjoy hiking and discover places that are both beautiful and wild.
