Third largest city in Germany, Munich has a little over 1.3 million inhabitants. It is the capital of the region of Bavaria and a major economic centre for the country. Famous around the world for its beer festival, it has a rich history dating back to the 12th Century. It has a vibrant cultural life with some of its museums renowned worldwide such as the Alte Pinakothek, and it hosts events such as the festival of opera and that of film that both attract an international audience.
