What to do in Millau : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
City of Aveyron in the Occitania region, Millau has about 22 000 inhabitants, and is located on the left bank of the Tarn, this since the 2nd century BC The viaduct is now one of the flagship sites from the region with regard to tourism: it is one of the largest bridges in Europe and the world, with its stays crossing the Tarn valley and its length of 2460 meters for 270 meters high. You can get a different insight if you take a boat with the boatmen of the viaduct to discover the fauna and flora and navigate below the gigantic viaduct. But you will make other interesting discoveries in Millau, as for example the church Notre-Dame of the Espinasse, of the 12th century, with its bell-tower of Toulouse style; the belfry formed of two parts, each of a different time, the square tower of the 12th century and the octagonal tower of the 17th, from where you will admire a superb panorama after having climbed the 210 steps that lead there; the washhouse of Ayrolles, 1749; the Old Mill, and the Old Bridge which spans the Tarn; the Hotel de Sambucy de Sorgues, or Sambucy Castle, with its beautiful gardens, dating from the 17th century; Les Halles, a metal construction typical of the Belle Epoque; the Church of the Sacred Heart of Neo-Byzantine style, which today houses the Museum of Millau and its rich collection of Gallo-Roman pottery. Millau can be reached via the A75 from Paris and Montpellier, or by train from Montpellier or Clermont-Ferrand, while buses run throughout the city for on-site transportation.
