What to do in Male : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of the Maldives, Male has a little over 100,000 inhabitants. Located on an atoll, it is built on several islands that have been artificially enlarged to accommodate a constantly increasing population. It has an international airport, and road traffic is very congested. The small size of the city obviously limits tourism opportunities: You can admire the magnificent mosque dating from 1984, and the National Museum built in the heart of Sultan Park which also houses a botanical garden and a zoo. Most hotels are concentrated in the area near the airport. It is only outside of the city that you will enjoy the picture-postcard scenery that made the reputation of the Maldives, turquoise lagoons and white sand beaches against a backdrop of deep blue sky.
