Isle in the Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia, Makatea has sixty inhabitants, who live by fishing, and trade in coconut crabs and copra. It has a total area of 24 km2. Exploited in the early 20th century for its phosphates, it still retains the abandoned remains of the old town of Vaitepaua. Throughout the island you walk on coral that is thousands of years old, encrusted with shells and fossil animals, you will also discover a palm that is endemic to this island.
