What to do in Lourdes : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Situated in the Hautes-Pyrénées, in the extreme south of France, Lourdes is a town of just under 15,000 inhabitants, known as a place of Christian pilgrimage following various apparitions that occurred there in 1858, and its international reputation it the second hotel park after Paris, to receive more than 5 million visitors each year. However, the city has experienced an equally rich history before that date, since the site has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The curious traveler can thus discover several landmarks: the library installed in the building of Les Halles with its superb metal structure and its ancient windows; several museums such as the Wax Museum or the Museum of the Nativity; Old Lourdes and its castle, which now houses the Pyrenean Museum; Old Bridge; the house of Saint Bernadette; the beautiful little square with its fountain Marcadal; the houses with red or pink walls of the Maréchal-Foch Avenue; the halls and the covered market; the garden of the convention center with its bandstand; Castle Soum; the magnificent City Hall. Could not obviously miss the Sanctuary, as the grotto of Massabielle or the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. In the surroundings, you will discover the Pic du Jer which you will access by funicular leaving the city, the Lourdes lake and golf which borders the caves du Loup and Saracens, the ruins of the former Benedictine abbey Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre. Lourdes is accessed by the A64 to Tarbes, then the RN21, but also by aircraft landing at the international airport of Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees, located on the town of Ossun. The city is also connected by a network of buses to several ski resorts and other cities of the department, and its station hosts a TGV from Paris and Bordeaux, as well as several TER. In Lourdes, the MonCitybus network used to connect together the various parts of the city.
