What to do in Lhasa : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

LhasaCapital of the autonomous Chinese area of Tibet, Lhasa has around 200,000 inhabitants. Built at the foot of Mount Gephel, it is home to Potala Palace, ancient residence of the Dalai Lama, as well as Norbulingka Palace, both of which are on the UNESCO heritage list. A sacred home to Buddhism, the city developed around three monasteries and is the destination for many pilgrims, the number of which is still increasing, has led to its rise in popularity. Nowadays sadly marked by the Chinese retaliatory measures, the city is an unusual tourist destination. The old Tibetan areas have been flattened to make way for the standard Chinese buildings but Potala Palace has been restored and elaborated with a replica of the old city gate which was destroyed. There are also a few mosques you may visit, erected for the Tibetan Muslims. Lhasa can be reached by plane via Beijing, or by train from Peking.
