What to do in Le Mans : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Located in the west of France, Le Mans is a city of the Pays de la Loire and has about 144,000 inhabitants. Known for its famous automobile and motorcycle racing, it also has the label city of art and history, and its historic district has several monuments of the medieval period. Admire especially the Saint-Julien cathedral, which you can access by a staircase leading from the Place des Jacobins: built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the cathedral has a entrance marked by a menhir. In the old town, you will walk through the narrow streets lined with stone or half-timbered houses, covered with slates. On the place of Cardinal Grente you will see the house of the bishop from the 16th century. Visit the museum of the Berangere Queen, then go to City Hall, Royal Palace, impressive group of buildings due 11th and 12th centuries. It can be seen around the city the beautiful remains of the Roman wall, with four towers on the original five, and a nice medieval-style garden where some stone spheres remain among those that were projected at the time of an assault in 1425 the Earl of Salisbury. If you're in town in July or August, you can enjoy the beautiful show of light and sound in the streets of the old town. Mans is accessed by train or by the A11 motorway on the Paris-Nantes, or the A28 on the axis Rouen and Tours. There is also an airport located 7 km from the city, but it is mostly used for private travel. In the city, you should know that the city center is essentially pedestrian, but there are also bike trails of 129 km. We can also move by bus or tram to avoid at best a little fluid traffic.
