What to do in La Rochelle : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Town in Charente Maritime in the south-west of France, La Rochelle is located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and has an important port, both for fishing and for the trade and craft. It has about 75,000 inhabitants and its rich heritage attracts many tourists and its lovely setting, perfect for water sports. It is accessed by the A10 from Paris, but also by TGV. There is also an airport that connects La Rochelle to many cities in Europe or North Africa through low-cost airlines. In the city, one travels by bus, bike self-service (230 km of cycle paths), or electric car map. You can discover the walled town and the medieval towers of the Old Port, iconic image of the city and the door Grosse Horloge, the Renaissance town hall, or the building of the Chamber of Commerce 17th century. Several parks and public gardens also worth a visit, as Charruyer park, classified site, with its English gardens and two streams running through it. You will also enjoy the beautiful beaches of the outskirts of the city, and will not miss the Lighthouse at the End of the world, at the tip of the Minimes, a copy of Cape Horn, all wood and octagonal. A must visit, the aquarium, one of the largest in Europe, with about 10 000 animals in 65 basins that restore the natural environment of origin of different species. Museums hand, several worth visiting, including the Museum of Fine Arts, in the former bishopric; the Museum of the New World; . Maritime Museum, on land and sea La Rochelle is famous also for several festive events to which it serves as a framework, among others: the Grand Pavois in September International Boat Show; the Francofolies music festival in July; Jazz between the two towers, a jazz festival held in May.
