What to do in Jerusalem : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of the State of Israel, Jerusalem is at an altitude of 700 metres in the Judean Mountains and has a little under 800,000 inhabitants. It has a mixed population combining different religions and different races. The quarters of the old city are mainly Muslim, others mainly Christian, Jew or Armenian. The city is said to be ‘three times holy’ as it is home to certain buildings and monuments sacred to the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths; the Wailing Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa mosque. There are also other sites that merit a visit during your stay in Jerusalem; the ramparts of Solomon the Magnificent, the Museum of Israel, Mount Zion, the King David Hotel, the old city with its citadel and the Tower of David, and of course a walk on the Mount of Olives. There are many other museums and cultural centres that will find walking around the city, of particular note are the Jerusalem Centre of Arts, the Botanical Gardens, and the Time Lift traces the three thousand years of the city’s history, there is also the Museum of Islamic Art and the Bible Landscape Museum. Concerning accommodation, you will have no problem finding a hotel or more traditional place to stay; hospitality is an essential part of the city’s culture. The same is true for eating establishments, whether you are looking for a local food stall or something a little more upmarket you are certain to find something to satisfy your taste. Regarding transport around the city, although the tramway is still under construction, you can easily get around the city using buses and taxis.
