What to do in Izmir : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
A Turkish city and the second port of the country, Izmir has a population of over 3 million. Built on the Aegean Sea coast, the city dates back in antiquity although it was partly destroyed in a huge fire in 1922. Only the Jewish and Turkish quarters were spared and the city has gradually been rebuilt since then. Nowadays it is a modern and pleasant city with various places to visit including the Ataturk Caddesi, the major shopping street in the city, Republic Square with its statue of Ataturk, the clock tower, the Konal Meydani esplanade along the gulf, the Museum of Archaeology with objects from sites including Ephesus and Bodrum, and Kafikale Castle from which there is a magnificent panoramic view over the rest of the city, the church of Saint Polycarp and the Cultural Park with its gardens, restaurants and zoo. There are many taxis available for your transport requirements in the city. Various seaside resorts have developed around the city over time, some of these are remarkably well preserved and offer magnificent beaches. From the city of Izmir you can visit famous sites such as Ephesus. Accommodation is available to suite all levels of comfort and all budgets.
