What to do in Istanbul : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The cultural and economical capital of Turkey, Istanbul has a population of just over 18 million if the entire agglomeration is taken into account. The city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Straddling the Bosphorus connecting the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, and therefore situated at the meeting of two continents, it is obviously marked by the influences of both the western and eastern worlds as well as the different civilizations that have left their mark over the years; Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Istanbul is a very popular tourist destination partly due to its excellent geographical position and pleasant climate, but also its numerous attractions such as the famous church of Hagia Sophia dating from 1500 years ago and transformed into a mosque in the 15th Century. There is also the famous Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, and the Dolmabahce Palace. Other places that particularly merit a visit include the Great Bazaar with three thousand stalls, the Archaeological Museum, the Galata Tower, the ramparts of Theodosius II and Istiklal Avenue. You may also wish to take a short cruise on the Bosphorus or explore the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, or pass an evening at the Istiklal Caddesi, always a lively place. Istanbul has a great range of places for accommodation and eating to suit a variety of tastes and budgets and transport is not a problem, taxis are ever present and there is also the bus, tram and metro.
