What to do in Havana : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Cuba, Havana has a population of two and a half million. It is bisected by the Almendares River which opens into the Florida Straits. Its position inside a bay enables the presence of three major ports. Its tropical climate with temperatures between 22 and 28°C make it a pleasant holiday destination. Its heritage is strongly accented by Spanish Colonial architecture, quite well conserved except in certain parts of the city where the economic situation is somewhat precarious. The historical centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and its restoration has revived and accentuated the Andalusian architecture of this area built in the middle of abundant greenery. Discover its small houses and boutiques, as well as the Cathedral Plaza and its beautiful church. Take a stroll along the Malecon, a road that follows the coast, and visit also the Verdado quarter with its museums, the great El Morro castle and the cathedral San Cristobla de la Habana. You will not fail to notice the ever present music that permeates the city. However, you should be aware that despite the low standard of living for many Cubans, it is expensive for tourists who constitute a major resource for the country.
