City of just under 90 000, Dunkirk is located in northern France, at the edge of the North Sea. Dubbed the Jean Bart City because of its past privateer city, it now houses the third port of France with regard to traffic. Dunkirk is accessed by the A25 from Lille or by the A16 from the Val d'Oise, and the train that connects the city to Paris (journey 1:45) and the TER to Lille, while the the nearest airport is Lille (90 km). In the city, you can travel by bus or bicycle, with 20 bicycle stations in self-service. Animated winter by one of the most famous carnivals in France, Dunkirk has several venues for visiting the curious traveler: the belfry which dominates the town and opens a magnificent view over the roofs and the North Sea; the port museum, former tobacco warehouse that reflects the military history of the city; Excentric the neighborhood imagined in the 30s by François Reynaert, especially with the Ziegler house painted wood; the Falklands villas with their Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture; the Grand Large district which is built on the former shipyards; Frac and its rich collection of contemporary art. Nature lovers will not miss the guided tour in the dunes, where several marked trails you will discover the peculiar landscape, fauna and flora, polders, but also fascinating historical sites.
