What to do in Damascus : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Syria, Damas has just over 1.6 million inhabitants. This city is one of the oldest throughout the world and has been influenced by many different civilisations; Persian, Greek, Arabic, Roman, and Assyrian amongst others… Damascus also saw the birth of Christianity. This city has experienced a strong urbanisation since the 70s. It is renowned worldwide for some of its craft traditions such as Damascening, Damask silk and whole candied fruits. The most remarkable building in the city is the Grand Mosque of Omeyyades, situated in the heart of the medina, that dates from 705. Visit the ramparts that date from the roman era with their seven gates. The El Azem Palace, the Citadel and the souks dedicated each to a specific product are also worth visiting. There are a variety of museums in Damascus including the National Museum tracing the world’s civilisations and the City History Museum. Damascus enjoys a Mediterranean climate and the best seasons for discovering the city are spring and autumn. The city people are very welcoming and the city has a rich and varied cultural and artistic life that reflects its dynamism all year round.
