What to do in Chartres : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
French town in the Eure-et-Loir, Chartres is less than 100 km from Paris and has about 39,000 residents. Circumvented by the Eure, the city is set on a rocky promontory overlooking the plain of Beauce. It is reached by train from Paris or Bordeaux, or by road via the A11 from Paris or Nantes. To move around the city, free shuttles can be borrowed, but it is very easy to explore on foot. You will discover the cobbled streets of the old city, the Parc des Bords de l'Eure with its animal park, the Museum of Agriculture and the Natural Science and Prehistory, offering interactive workshops for youngsters, but it is obviously the cathedral which deserves your attention: classified by UNESCO, this masterpiece can easily compete with Notre-Dame de Paris, with its 140 meters long and 37 meters high, crypt of the 11th century, its superb and countless windows, and garden of the bishopric with its maze. To visit also the market on Saturday morning instead of Billiards, the flower market, the pace of the Swan, the amazing Picassiette house decorated for debris earthenware, glass and porcelain. Do not miss the dusk the illuminations of "Chartres light" that put the city in value in a very nice way, and do not forget to try the local specialty, the macarons!
