What to do in Catania : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
With 400 000 inhabitants, Catania is the second town in Sicily (Italy) after Palermo and is located on the eastern coast of the island. Founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC, today made up of wide streets and large squares, it offers constructions in lava stone, and is dominated by Etna. The city was destroyed in the 17th century by a volcanic eruption, then an earthquake and rebuilt in the 18th in a baroque style that still gives all its beauty to the city. You should see for example the Duomo, topped by the statue of St. Agatha, the patron saint of the city; the Senatorial Palace near the Elephant Fountain, which is itself a symbol of the city; the Church of the Abbey of St. Agatha with its facade and richly decorated; the faculty of the Ateneo; the Benedictine monastery of St. Nicolas Arena, unfinished but very imposing; the fish market, picturesque; the beautiful churches that line the street Crucifère; Bellini park. Close to discover the slopes of Etna and amazing scenery, you can enjoy hiking or horseback riding in the middle of the thick vegetation and observe all kinds of birds and many other animals. Diving you will also explore the rich seabed. The city is served by an international airport and harbor also hosts many boats from the mainland; the supply of accommodation is large and varied.
