What to do in Bratislava : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Slovakia, Bratislava has around 500,000 inhabitants. Crossed by the Danube, it has numerous museums, universities and theatres making it a major cultural centre. Its history is marked by diverse influences including the Hungarian, German, Slovak and Hewish cultures. Bratislava is enjoying a real touristic success, the old town has a number of historical monuments and buildings, some dating from the Middle Ages, as well as Baroque Palaces, churches such as the gothic cathedral of Saint Martin and the blue church in an Art Nouveau style. The new bridge however is highly representative of the 20th Century whereas the two afore mentioned churches are more representative of its past. Ensure you visit the central square surrounded by elegant buildings including the old City Hall, the Saint Michael Gate houses a Military Museum. Also do not miss a visit to the First palace with its statues and tapestries dating from the 17th Century. Enjoy a stroll around the streets lined with cafes and restaurants and indulge in some shopping in the old town where you will find many authentic traditional objects for sale overseen by the Ministry of Culture.
