The capital of Brazil, Brasilia is situated at a little over a thousand metres in altitude and has over two million inhabitants despite its recent existence as it only really came into being in 1960. It is therefore not due to historical monuments that it will be placed on the UNESCO Heritage List, however its modern architecture is definitely worth a mention together with its layout in the shape of an airplane, and its symmetrical structure and self-sufficient residential quarters. However there are a certain number of remarkable monuments and buildings such as the cathedral Our Lady of the Apparition, the Dom Pesco Sanctuary, the Juscelino Kubitschek Mausoleum, the National Congress, and the Boa Vontade Temple. The city has not as yet become a top spot for tourists but the addition of leisure amenities at Paranoa Lake will no doubt provoke an increase in tourism. For now, one day is sufficient to explore the major places of interest in the city, this is best completed by car as the city is not laid out for strolling around.
