What to do in Belfort : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
City of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France, Belfort has about 50,000 inhabitants, and the traces of its past dating back to prehistoric times. Situated between the Jura Mountains and those of Vosges, Belfort is worth a visit if you pass by, although the city is not a tourist place out. You will discover in particular the citadel overlooking the city, whose fortifications were improved in the 17th century by Vauban, and of course the famous and imposing Lion of Belfort statue created in the 19th by Bartholdi in blocks of pink sandstone, measuring 22 meters long and 11 meters high tribute to the resilience of the people during the siege of 1870. You can also visit the historic heart and its half-timbered houses with their bright colors, the Place d'Armes with the City Hall and the St. Christopher's Cathedral, the Republic square with the monument of three seats and the hall to the architecture so original. Side museums, you'll find the Museum of Modern Art and its fine collection of Picasso, Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier and Braque; the Museum of History and Archaeology housed in the citadel; the Museum of Fine Arts with works spanning a period from the Middle Ages to the present. Belfort is accessed via the A36 motorway from Beaune and Mulhouse, and the N1019 from Paris or Switzerland, as well as the TGV to Dijon, Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, among others. You can take the plane and land at the airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, located 65 km from Belfort. For travel in the city, there is a bus network, and self-service bicycles also possible to borrow the bike paths quite numerous.
