What to do in Basse-Terre : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of China, Beijing (known also as Peking) has a population of 17 million. Situated in the north east of the country Beijing is its political and cultural centre. It has a continental climate despite its proximity to the eastern sea, and experiences marked and extreme changes in temperature. The city is served by an international airport and also has a lively train station. The metro and the numerous taxis help people get around in the city. Peking has a rich and ancient history going back over 250,000 years. Numerous monuments and buildings have witnessed the Imperial age such as the Tien’anmen Gate, the Forbidden City and the Sky Temple. There are many theatres and around a hundred museums, all very interesting in their own way, these included the National Museum of China, Capital museum and the Museum of Palaeontology. It is unheard of to visit Peking without going to the Great Wall, part of which lies fairly close by. There is also the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong in which his body can be seen inside its glass sarcophagus, also there is the Temple of Yonghe dedicated to Tibetan Buddhism. You can enjoy a stroll around the hutongs which are the popular quarters made of traditional low houses and enjoy the serenity of the parks that are spread throughout the city. Those who seek gastronomic delights will enjoy tasting the different Chinese specialities that can be found in numerous restaurants, especially the famous Peking Glazed Duck and the Chinese Fondue, also try the Chinese ravioli, called jiaosi.
