The capital of Thailand, Bangkok has over six million inhabitants, twelve million according to some estimates. The city is separated into two by the river Chao Phraya. On the right bank is the more traditional part of the city, criss-crossed with canals joining the river. On the left bank are the major buildings of touristic interest and the modern quarters. There are a number of places and sites that should not be missed including Wat Pho with its large recumbent Buddha, the Royal Palace that has an Emerald Buddha, and Vimarn Mek, the old Royal Palace made of gilded teak that is now a museum. There are also the old city quarters of Bang Lampu and Phra Athit that are interesting places to visit. One of the greatest attractions of this city however is its unceasing activity; the gigantic market that will stir your senses and where it appears you can find everything and anything; flowers, food, clothing, diverse objects… Night life is also well catered for in Bangkok, ever present and vivacious. However there are still many places in this diverse city such as the parks and temples where peace and calm reigns uninterrupted and where you can unwind and relax.
