What to do in Asmara : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Asmara is the capital of Eritrea: located a hundred kilometers from the coast, in the Central Highlands, it has just over 500 000 inhabitants. It is sometimes nicknamed "Little Rome" because many buildings are influenced by Italian architecture, such as the St. Joseph Cathedral. But besides the European culture, the city is also marked by Arab and African influences. It is in any case very different from other African cities: first by its freshness (it stands at 2500 m above sea level), its quiet, its cleanliness. At dawn, the church bells respond to the call of the muezzin, the streets lined with palm trees and bougainvillea are dotted with cafes where you can enjoy espresso and you will also find many art deco architecture houses, often pure wonders. Do not miss the various markets in the city (seeds market, craft market), the Médébar former caravanserai where we now recycle metal, St. Mary's Cathedral (climb to the top of the bell tower to watch the sunset), plus the National Museum of Eritrea.
