What to do in Ashgabat : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat is located south-west of the country, in an oasis of Karakum desert, close to the border with Iran. It has about 800 000 inhabitants. Its special feature is the large number of white marble buildings, who are sometimes nicknamed "the white city". It has an international airport. To get around town, you can use the bus or trolley. There are many attractions for the curious traveler: the Azadi Mosque, which is built on the model of the traditional Ottoman architecture; Iranian Mosque, futuristic appearance; the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the carpet; the Neutrality Arch, 250 meters high; the monument to the Constitution; the Ashgabat mast 133 meters high; Ashgabat the fountain; the Palace of Turkmenbashi, with its golden dome; Independence monument. The city also has many parks and squares, such as the Botanical Garden Independence park, or the Pushkin Square with the bust of the famous Russian poet, not to mention the World of Turkmenbashi Tales.
