What to do in Ankara : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Turkey, Ankara has a population of around 4 million. Although steeped in ancient history, Ankara is surprisingly a very green and modern city where several different styles of architecture can be found co-mingling. One of Ankara’s highlights is the Byzantine citadel that dominates the city from its position high on the hill; wander around the streets and you will experience a timeless past, contrasting sharply with the modern city. There are also a number of Roman ruins at Ankara including those of the August Temple and the Roman Baths as well as Julian’s Column. Do visit the Ataturk mausoleum, he founded the Turkish republic. The Anatolian Civilization Museum is also worth a visit to see its unique collection of prehistoric art. The Ethnographical Museum is also very interesting for its portrayal of life during the Ottoman period. There are two particular mosques that are worth noting; Haci Bayram, restored in the 16th Century and sporting Kutahya faience, and the Aslahane Mosque, dating from the 13th Century with its portal decorated in Turquoise with stalactites. Traffic in Ankara is terrible so you would best benefit from the city by using the buses and local taxis, inexpensive and easy to find.
