Capital of the province of the same name in Andalucía, Almeria is a city with just under 200,000 inhabitants. Located on the south coast it is the sunniest city in Europe and benefits from a Mediterranean climate. There are many places in this city are worth visiting including the Muslim fortress Alcazaba, the ‘Calle de la Almedina’, the walls of Jayran with its chateau ruins, Jayran reservoirs, San Juan Evangelista church including the remains of the Grand Mosque that was there beforehand, the cathedral with its Renaissance portals, and the Claras Convent. There is also the Olive Oil Museum that is in an old mill, the Archaeological Museum, the Nicholas Salmeron Park boasting trees of hundreds of years old and numerous ponds and fountains, and the unusual Bulls Plaza in the shape of a 20 sided polygon. History has doted this city with diverse influences that have shaped its unusual character, particularly those of its Muslim past, and stamped it with a unique combination of numerous ruins and historical buildings together with a modern dynamism.
