What to do in Algiers : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Algiers is a city of just over 2 million inhabitants, the country’s capital and a major Mediterranean port, it is also known as ‘White Algiers’. Built on the side of the Sahel hills in terraces of streets and alleys, interconnected with flights of steps of all kinds, Algiers has a Colonial flavour to it that boasts Muslim overtones, mainly painted in white giving the town its name. The sea extends from the north to the east creating the Bay of Algiers. Algiers is a very dynamic city; culturally, socially and economically. Be sure to visit the Casbah at the heart of the city boasting numerous treasures including palaces, mausoleums and mosques. The Monument to the Martyrs is one place that should not be missed; 92 metres high it represents a place of contemplation dedicated to the memory of the martyrs in the war for independence. The oldest building in the city is the Great Mosque dating from the 11th Century. Other places worth a visit include the neo-byzantine basilica of Notre Dame d’Afrique, the Abd-el-Tif Villa, the Reis Palace, the National Fine Arts Museum, the People’s Palace and the National Museum of Classical and Muslim Antiquities among others.
