What to do in Abbeville : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

AbbevilleFrench city of the Somme, in the north of the country, Abbeville has about 23,000 inhabitants, and can be reached by the A16 coming from Paris or the A28 coming from Rouen. You can also come by train, and to get around the city, you can choose between taxis, or a very good bus network that covers the entire city. The city offers the visitor a very interesting historical and architectural heritage, despite many destructions due to the Second World War, and you will discover for example the Saint-Vulfran collegiate church, built in 1488, a gem of Flamboyant Gothic art, with its rich stone lace decor, its rose window and its many statues; the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, from the 11th century, and its superb stained glass made by Alfred Manessier between 1982 and 1993. Also discover the belfry dating from 1209, one of the oldest in France, which now houses the Boucher-de -Perthes; this museum offers a rich collection of fine arts and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the present day, an archaeological section, as well as a natural history collection that reflects the ecosystem of the Bay of the Somme; the castle and the garden of Bagatelle, built in 1752, very refined 18th century madness, with its period furniture and its 12 hectares park with remarkable trees; Carmel and its gardens, where the Carmelites lived from 1821 to 1998, in the former convent of the Capuchins of the 17th century; the municipal theater, built in the early 20th century, and which is one of the few theaters in the north of France to have an Italian-style theater. Lovers of shows and concerts can visit the Espace Culturel Saint-André, and for those who prefer outdoor activities, Abbeville is a good starting point for many excursions in the Bay of the Somme.
