If for many people the discovery of England is limited to a trip to London, the region of the capital has many other places of interest. Whether it’s cities like Oxford or Cambridge, to mention only the most famous, or nature spots allowing to escape from the London atmosphere for a while…
What to do, visit and where to go on a trip around the city of London?
Within a radius of a hundred kilometers around London…
Beaconsfield
It is in this town west of London that you can visit the oldest miniature park in the world: Bekonscot. The place is very popular locally with families.
Brighton
Here is one of the most famous seaside towns in England, easily accessible from the capital, with its pretty seafront typical of English resorts. The impressive cliffs of the Seven Sisters are just next door.
Cambridge
As famous as Oxford for its colleges and universities, Cambridge also offers a superb center, pleasant parks and gardens, as well as many museums. It is not for nothing that the two university towns are among the most beautiful in England and are a must for any visit to the London area!
Canterbury
The famous city of Kent, south-east of London, is internationally known for its imposing cathedral, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, but also its old medieval center. The city is quite touristy.
Duxford
A few kilometers south of the city of Cambridge, this large village which was an important air base during the Second World War is home to the Imperial War Museum, well known and visited by enthusiasts.
Greenwich
This borough on the outskirts of London is known for its meridian, its museums and various sites (observatory, docks, Royal Park ….) in its maritime district, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Oxford
It is THE university city of England and the oldest, competing with Cambridge, with its colleges, its museums and its nice urban center. Just next door, in the neighboring township of Woodstock, Blenheim Palace is a beautiful 18th century Unesco listed castle that is also worth a visit.

Seven Sisters
These are impressive chalky cliffs east of the city of Brighton, typical of the south coast. Wild and spectacular, their image is sometimes presented instead of the less beautiful but more famous cliffs of Dover.
Harry Potter Studio
Although a bit far from the center of London (and with a daily number of entries limited to about 6,000), these 14,000 square meters where the Harry Potter films were shot have become for many an almost unavoidable complement to a visit of the British capital.
The Downs
The Downs is a hilly region (the South and North Downs) between the city of London and the English Channel, much appreciated by the inhabitants of the capital for their walking and cycling opportunities in the beautiful English countryside.
Waddesdon Manor
Here is a beautiful nineteenth century castle, with magnificent gardens, built in the township of the same name in northwest London. It is one of the most visited castles in the kingdom.
Windsor
West of London, the city is famous for its huge royal castle that can be visited. You can also visit Legoland Park and the colleges of Eton, which is the township associated with Windsor.
Weather, temperature, what time of year for a walk in the region?
The climate of London and its surroundings is characterized first of all by a low thermal amplitude with rather few average differences between summer and winter (roughly from 5 to 20°C) or day and night. In short, it is never very hot without being very cold.
On the other hand, it is true that rain is very present, and if they are only rarely big storms, the showers are almost regular almost throughout the year.
As far as visits are concerned, especially if you go out of the cities and London, late spring and summer are the most pleasant periods. And for more details it’s here…
